SHoPPER (Study of Household Purchasing Patterns, Eating, and Recreation) Unhealthy dietary intake contributes to heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and cancer in the U.S., but the household, behavioral, and economic factors that influence the selection of healthy and unhealthy foods from the environment are unknown. This project used innovative methods to assess the nutrient content of household food choices in Chicago households. Household food purchases will be documented by research staff during repeated home assessment visits, and the foods available in the home environment will be documented by using a validated auditing instrument. In addition to food purchasing and dietary intake, this project examines factors associated physical and sedentary activity and sleep, each of which is implicated in chronic disease risk.
